Business Model Canvas for ARTISTS

Business Model Canvas for ARTISTS

Six amazing artists came together for two evenings in September, creating a “Business Model Canvas” to think about how their creative work could produce income.  ArtSpark discovered the “Business Model Canvas” during the Start Up Weekend in Albuquerque last year.  After working intensely with a start-up team using the model all weekend, I quickly realized that it was the PERFECT approach for artists, artisans, designers and other creatives.  Yes, it needed to be modified so that it made sense to artists who often don’t relate to business terms like “customer segments” and “value proposition.”  Yet, the short and sweet

An Ode to Creative Conversations

ArtSpark has joined up with Creative ABQ to co-sponsor a series of “Creative Conversations” here in ABQ.  These Conversations are a different kind of gathering as we celebrate and dialogue about the spectrum of creativity in our community, ranging from creative businesses to artistic creativity to social action.  This Thursday at 5pm (tomorrow!) is a conversation with Marietta Leis and David Vogel about their recent artist residency in Finland.  Conversationalists will meet at Marietta’s studio accompanied by wine and nibblies.  The next Creative Conversation will be with The Grove Cafe and Market, a very luscious and successful business in ABQ’s

Artist + ArtSpark = chocolate and community!

Michelle Otero’s ArtSpark campaign was crowned with a Chocolate Fiesta last Friday night. About 20 supporters turned out to celebrate Michelle’s draft of her memoir, Vessels, and also to eat tortilla soup, drink red wine, and gorge on (lots of!) chocolate together. It was a lovely evening, full of inspiration and aspirations (read Michelle’s latest blog post about the event here). Michelle also read from Vessels; it is beautifully written and poignant, evidenced by many eyes in the room wet with tears. Michelle and I met earlier that week at a local Starbucks where we have sat many times hatching

Update: Michelle Otero and “Vessels”

Michelle Otero, who’s taken the brave leap as the second ArtSpark project so far, is gathering momentum… GREAT! Impressive impact so far: since launching her project (to write a memoir entitled Vessels) in December, her blog subscriber list has increased, she’s received a donated plane ticket to a writer’s conference as well as $100 to continue meeting with her writing coach. One of my favorite things that Michelle has requested from her community is a “devotion” – or a commitment to some action until January 31st while she is committing, full-time, to write Vessels. So please take a moment to

A Room of Her Own…

Michelle Otero is declaring her commitment to writing a memoir, Vessels, for the remainder of December and into January. Her focus hasn’t come easy, what with sharing a lively house with her novio, Henry, and his two children. Michelle writes in her wonderful blog about sharing an office with Henry (who works at home a lot) with “big Sony headphones over my ears, my laptop set to “Spirit of the Rainforest” on Pandora to tune out Henry’s conference calls.” While she knows that “this arrangement worked much better than not writing,” she still “craved a room of my own.” As
